Profile

Electric drive systems with a system – for more than 35 years in Hartha

SPAT is a specialist for compact, intelligent drive systems. Since 1990, we have been developing and manufacturing electric drives in Hartha for the machinery and plant engineering sector – firmly rooted in a region with more than 100 years of tradition in electric motor development.

What sets us apart is the combination of engineering expertise and down-to-earth reliability: we listen, think along with you and deliver solutions that have to prove themselves in everyday use – often over many years or even decades. Our drive systems are used wherever motion has to be reliable, precise and safe.

PHILOSOPHY

What drives us

Partner rather than supplier – we see ourselves not as a mere supplier, but as a partner for your drive technology. Our focus is not just on the motor itself, but on the contribution our drive makes to improving your machine – in terms of performance, efficiency and competitiveness. That is why we talk with you about loads, environmental conditions, interfaces and lifetime requirements – and about what your customers expect from your product. On this basis, we create a drive system that is technically well-matched and delivers real added value in your market.

Platform instead of one-off development – the basis for this is our SPAT MDS platform. Here we combine proven, adaptable components into application-specific systems – from the first prototypes through to series production. In-house development in electronics, software and mechanics, a dedicated test laboratory as well as assembly and final testing under one roof ensure that we understand your solution technically and can take responsibility for its quality.

Long-term availability – looking ahead is equally important to us: we still supply drives today that we introduced 15 to 20 years ago. If something changes in the supply chain and individual components are no longer available, we do not leave you alone with this situation. In such cases, we develop a redesign that remains 1:1 compatible mechanically, electrically and functionally. This protects your investments, secures spare-part availability and ensures that your machines can continue running for many years to come.

Responsibility and trust – our drives may be a small building block within your products – but they are often decisive for reliable motion. We take this responsibility seriously, because without a drive, nothing moves.

Company History

Technical tradition meets modern system development

The home of SPAT, the small Saxon town of Hartha, has a long tradition in the development and production of small electric drives. As early as 1922, the merchants Oemig and Sander began manufacturing miniature electric motors. By 1937, Oemig & Co. AG employed 280 people. After the company was nationalized in 1946, it continued as VEM Elektrokleinmotoren- und Gerätewerk Hartha and became one of the largest electric motor manufacturers in the former GDR. The workforce grew to 1,200 employees working in several production facilities in Hartha and the surrounding area. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, the plant was shut down in 1991.

Founding of Spezialantriebstechnik GmbH

1990

Engineers Hermann Otto and Roland Kühnel took the initiative to start anew and founded Spezialantriebstechnik GmbH as an engineering office and technical agency for drive technology components.

Expansion of Business Activities

1992

In addition to trading drive technology components, SPAT began modifying catalog products from its distribution partners to meet customer specifications. This marked the transition from a pure sales agency to a company with its own product portfolio. Driven by growing demand for customized drive solutions, the Research & Development department was established – and remains the backbone of the company today.

The First Proprietary Drive

1995

SPAT’s first in-house development came to market – a drive system for format adjustment in printing machines. It was based on a DC gear motor with an integrated analog multi-turn absolute encoder for position feedback. SPAT has maintained close ties with the printing industry ever since and continues to supply these drives for the spare parts market to this day.

Decentralized and Compact

1997

SPAT recognized early on the advantages of decentralization and began producing positioning drives with integrated power electronics. This allowed higher-level controllers to operate the drives without additional hardware or power stages. Over the years, electronics development – particularly in motor control – has become a central area of expertise and remains one of SPAT’s core competencies. The concept of decentralized compact drives continues to be a key element of SPAT’s corporate philosophy.

Digital and Connected

2000

At the turn of the millennium, SPAT introduced its first intelligent compact drive. This new generation was based on brushless DC motors, which still represent the state of the art in professional applications. The integrated 4-quadrant motor controller featured a fieldbus interface for the first time, significantly enhancing functionality and application flexibility.

These compact drives were later supplied as drive systems for operating tables to a major medical technology manufacturer. Up to eight SPAT drives are used in a single operating table.

Inauguration of the New Company Building

2003

SPAT moved into its newly constructed headquarters in the West Industrial Area of Hartha. The previous downtown location had become too small and left no room for expansion. The new facility provides ideal working conditions for development, assembly, and administration.

SPATY Drive Series

2006

With the launch of the SPATY drive series, motor controllers were completely redesigned and modernized. The use of high-resolution position sensors enabled sinusoidal commutation and vector control, elevating SPAT drives into the league of servo drives.

Connectivity was also significantly enhanced through the implementation of advanced fieldbus systems such as CANopen and Profibus. A special feature of this series is the integrated multi-turn absolute encoder – a proprietary SPAT development that forms an integral part of the motor controller. This makes the drives particularly well-suited for positioning tasks such as format adjustments.

Introduction of the Modular Drive System

2017

The modular SPAT MDS drive system is the result of over 25 years of experience in the development and production of drive systems. Standardized system components can be combined into a customized drive solution according to application requirements. Thanks to its platform-based concept, customer-specific modifications can be implemented quickly and efficiently.
